Build a £50,000 funding case
Break the request into supplier payments, staffing, stock, professional costs and a contingency where relevant. If a £65,000 project can safely use £15,000 of existing cash, the initial funding gap is £50,000 before financing costs.
Do not use all the business’s cash contribution if that leaves routine bills unsupported. A project can be attractive in the long run while putting the business under immediate pressure if repayments begin before additional receipts arrive.
Illustrative repayments: monthly payment versus total cost
Assuming £50,000.00 borrowed at a fixed 12% nominal annual interest rate, calculated monthly on the reducing balance, with equal monthly payments and no fees: over 36 months the payment is approximately £1,660.72, total interest £9,785.76 and total repayable £59,785.76.
With the same amount and assumed rate over 60 months, the payment is approximately £1,112.22, total interest £16,733.34 and total repayable £66,733.34. The longer term reduces the monthly payment but increases the total interest. Calculations use unrounded payments; a lender’s rounding and final instalment may differ.
Test the payment in the weakest months
Use a monthly cash forecast rather than an annual profit average. Include current loan payments and the dates taxes, insurance and supplier balances are due. Compare the new payment with cash remaining after these obligations.
Run a case with lower sales and a delayed major customer. Keep the assumptions explicit so a lender can understand them. A larger turnover figure does not automatically support £50,000 of additional debt if margins are thin or receipts are slow.
Unsecured, secured or purpose-specific finance?
An unsecured £50,000 loan can still require a personal guarantee. A secured offer can involve valuation and legal costs as well as the risk to the asset. No market-wide rule makes this amount automatically secured or unsecured.
If most of the request buys equipment, compare hire purchase or leasing for that asset. If it funds existing eligible invoices, compare an invoice facility. These structures have their own fees and operational requirements, so the lowest monthly figure is not enough.
What evidence will support the request?
Prepare bank statements, accounts, up-to-date management figures and a schedule of existing debt. Include supplier quotations and the forecast behind the use of funds. Explain any recent change in sales or expenses that filed accounts will not show.
Compare the actual offer’s net advance, total repayable, early settlement cost and guarantee. Shareholder’s general referral does not establish eligibility for £50,000 or a named lender. Approval remains the provider’s decision.
A few things worth knowing
Common questions
How much turnover do I need for a £50,000 loan?
There is no single turnover threshold across providers. Cash flow, margins, trading history, existing debt and the proposed product all affect assessment.
Can I repay £50,000 over five years?
Some products may allow that term, subject to eligibility. A longer term can lower monthly payments while increasing total interest; the example does not establish availability.
Can equipment finance replace part of a £50,000 loan?
Potentially, where a provider accepts the specific asset. Compare deposit, ownership, fees and the remaining working-capital requirement.
