Credit history guide

Bad credit business loans

A past credit problem can make borrowing harder, but it does not tell the whole story. Lenders set their own criteria and assess the business, the application and its ability to repay.

What does “bad credit” mean for a business?

There is no single label that every lender uses. A lender may review the company’s credit history, directors’ or members’ information, repayment conduct, existing commitments and the business’s current finances. Different providers can reach different decisions from the same circumstances.

A missed payment, county court judgment, insolvency event or thin credit file may be relevant, but the age, status and context of an item can matter. Check the underlying records for errors before applying.

What else may affect an application?

Credit history is one part of a lender’s assessment. It may also consider how long the business has traded, turnover, cash flow, profitability, current debt, the requested amount and what the funds will be used for.

A lender may ask for recent bank statements, accounts, management information or a forecast. Prepare a straightforward explanation of any adverse event and show what has changed, using accurate supporting figures rather than assurances alone.

Ways to prepare before seeking finance

Preparation cannot remove accurate adverse information or guarantee an offer. It can help you understand what a lender will see and avoid applying for an amount the business cannot comfortably service.

  • Check company and relevant personal credit records for mistakes.
  • Bring bookkeeping, bank statements and accounts up to date.
  • Set out the funding purpose and a realistic repayment plan.
  • Ask whether an initial check is a soft search or a full credit search.
  • Compare lender criteria before submitting a complete application.

Check the cost and risk of any offer

If a lender is willing to consider an application, the rate, amount, term or security requirements may differ from another offer. Compare total repayable, fees, missed-payment consequences and early-repayment terms—not just whether the application is accepted.

Be cautious of claims that approval is guaranteed or that a fee will secure a loan. Confirm who the lender is, what the fee covers and whether it is refundable before paying. Do not borrow more or accept a personal guarantee without understanding the consequences.

A few things worth knowing

Common questions

Can I get a business loan with bad credit?

Some lenders may consider an application where there is adverse credit, but criteria and outcomes vary. They can assess the full financial picture, and approval is never guaranteed. Compare the total cost and any security or guarantee required.

Does a director’s personal credit affect a company loan?

A lender may review personal credit information as part of its assessment, particularly where a director’s guarantee is requested. The checks and criteria depend on the lender and product.

Will applying for a business loan affect my credit score?

It depends on the type of check and whose credit file is searched. Ask the provider whether its eligibility check is a soft search and whether a full application involves a hard search before proceeding.
