Business loans for restaurants

Restaurant finance needs to match the way cash moves through a service business. Kitchen equipment, a new site and a short seasonal gap are different funding needs. Compare a business loan with equipment finance and card-sales funding without treating busy services as proof of spare cash.

How Shareholder is paid

Shareholder receives referral fees, commissions and advertising payments from providers and commercial partners, including payments for clicks on links or calls to action, leads and referrals. Providers shown or linked to may have a commercial relationship with us. We never charge clients directly. Any interest, fees or charges for a provider’s products are separate and set by that provider.

Choose finance for the actual restaurant project

A refurbishment may require cash for building work, a rent deposit, equipment and wages before reopening. An equipment agreement may cover the kitchen asset but not the rest. Separate these costs so a loan or combination of facilities leaves enough operating cash.

For a second site, prepare a site-level budget rather than relying on the original restaurant’s sales. Opening delays, staff training and a slower first trading period can create repayments before the new location has a stable customer base.

Loan, equipment finance or merchant cash advance?

A term loan offers a scheduled repayment profile. Asset finance can spread the cost of ovens, refrigeration or other eligible equipment. A merchant cash advance may collect from card receipts, which can follow trading volumes but still removes cash needed for the next service.

Do not assume every sales-linked product has no minimum payment, guarantee or maturity date. Check whether delivery-platform receipts, card transactions, cash takings and refunds fall within the collection base. A percentage of sales is not a percentage of profit.

Stress food margins, wages and quiet trading periods

Forecast ingredient purchases, waste, payroll, rent, utilities and existing finance before adding the new payment. Include lower sales and higher input prices together. A restaurant with a full dining room may still have limited debt-service capacity after discounts and delivery commissions.

For illustration, a 10% sales deduction from £60,000 eligible monthly receipts is £6,000. The remaining £54,000 must cover the business’s other cash obligations. That is a collection example, not a funding offer or evidence that the deduction is affordable.

What a provider will want to understand

Useful evidence can include business bank statements, card-processing history, site accounts, management information, lease terms, supplier quotations and the purpose of funds. Explain seasonality and any closures rather than allowing unusual months to distort the picture.

A new restaurant without actual receipts may not fit an established-sales funding product. For a start-up, distinguish personal Start Up Loans from company borrowing and consider whether the launch should be staged. A founder’s experience does not replace the lender’s checks.

Compare cost and operational risk before accepting

Check the net advance, total repayable, fixed fees, collection frequency and any guarantee or asset security. If an essential kitchen asset can be repossessed after default, include the consequences for trading in the decision.

Shareholder’s general enquiry is a referral, not a guaranteed restaurant-finance offer. Compare the actual provider terms against a lower-sales forecast and keep funds for routine bills rather than spending the entire advance on the fit-out.

A few things worth knowing

Common questions

Can restaurant card takings support an advance?

Some providers assess eligible card or processor receipts for merchant funding. Trading history, collection terms and affordability still matter; there is no universal approval rule.

Can a new restaurant borrow before opening?

Some start-up-specific routes may be available, but a product requiring actual sales will not be satisfied by forecasts alone. Check the legal borrower and personal liability.

Should I use a loan for kitchen equipment?

Compare a loan with hire purchase or leasing. Deposits, ownership, maintenance, end-of-term payments and asset-recovery rights can change which structure fits.
